Apple is reportedly preparing a major change to its iPhone launch rhythm, and the biggest surprise may be what does not arrive in September. Instead of the usual full flagship lineup, the company could reserve the standard iPhone 18 for early 2027.
That shift would leave the focus of the September stage on premium models and Apple’s first foldable device. If the reports prove accurate, Apple may use the event to highlight the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a foldable model that could become one of the company’s most important product introductions in years.
A different launch strategy is taking shape
For years, Apple has introduced its main iPhone lineup at the same time in September. The rumored plan would break that pattern by splitting premium and mainstream releases into separate windows.
According to the circulating reports, Apple is considering a staged rollout. The premium models would come first, followed months later by more affordable devices such as the standard iPhone 18, possibly the iPhone 18e, and the next Air generation.
This would give Apple more room to spotlight its higher-end devices during the most visible launch period. It could also extend attention across several months instead of concentrating everything into one event.
The foldable model could define the September event
The device drawing the most attention is Apple’s first foldable iPhone. Some reports refer to it as the iPhone Fold, while others suggest Apple may market it as the iPhone Ultra.
Whatever the final name, the device is said to follow a book-style folding design. Leaks point to a 7.8-inch foldable OLED inner display and a 5.5-inch external cover screen.
The phone is also expected to be extremely thin. On price, it is being described as Apple’s most expensive smartphone yet, with a starting point above $2,000.
If Apple unveils it, the device would mark the company’s official entry into the foldable phone segment. That market is already occupied by Samsung, Google, and several Chinese smartphone makers.
What is expected from the Pro lineup
Despite the attention around the foldable device, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are still expected to remain central to Apple’s September showcase. They are likely to continue as the company’s flagship hardware for the year.
The Pro Max model is expected to stay Apple’s large-screen premium phone. It is also being positioned as the model most likely to receive the biggest battery and camera-related upgrades.
Rumors around the Pro models point to a wider set of improvements. Apple may use a better LTPO OLED panel with higher brightness, better efficiency, and improved image quality.
The Dynamic Island is also said to become much smaller. If that happens, the front of the phone could look cleaner while giving users more visible screen space.
Camera changes are also being discussed. The list includes a variable-aperture main sensor, improved telephoto capabilities, and a new 24MP front camera, along with more advanced image processing for low-light photos and video.
For performance, the lineup is expected to move to the A20 Pro chip. Reports suggest it may be built using TSMC’s 2nm process, which could improve efficiency and computing power.
Why Apple may be changing course
Analysts see the rumored delay of the standard iPhone 18 as part of a broader product strategy shift. Separating premium and mainstream launches could help Apple give each category more attention and keep consumer interest alive for longer.
It may also simplify production planning while allowing Apple to create more space for headline products such as the foldable phone and its next-generation AI features. That would make the premium launch window more focused and potentially more memorable.
Apple has not confirmed any of the reports. Even so, the possibility of a September event led by a foldable iPhone, with the standard iPhone 18 held back until 2027, is already reshaping expectations for the company’s next product cycle.
