WhatsApp users on older iPhones will face a new compatibility line starting 30 November 2026. The app will require iOS 15.5 or later to keep working, and anyone below that threshold will need to update before the deadline.
The change matters because WhatsApp remains one of the most widely used messaging apps in daily life. The good news is that no iPhone model is losing support outright in this update.
What changes for users
At present, WhatsApp supports iPhones running iOS 15.1 and newer. From the end of November 2026, that minimum will rise to iOS 15.5, which means users on older software must move up to keep access.
Meta has confirmed that the new policy begins on 30 November 2026. Users who still have an older iOS version should check their system settings in advance so the app does not stop working unexpectedly.

Older iPhones are affected, but not excluded
The change involves several long-serving iPhone models, including the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, first-generation iPhone SE, iPhone 7, and iPhone 7 Plus. These devices are still in use among many owners, which makes the warning relevant for a large group of users.
Even so, none of those models is being cut off by model name alone. All five can still be updated to iOS 15.8.8, which remains above WhatsApp’s new minimum requirement.
That means users do not need to replace their phones just to keep using the app. The immediate task is simply to install the latest iOS version available on the device.
How to stay compatible
The update path is straightforward through the iPhone settings menu. Users can go to Settings, then General, and then Software Update to check whether a newer version is available.
For owners of supported older models, the most important step is to confirm the installed iOS version well before the deadline. If the device is still below iOS 15.5, the update should be completed before 30 November 2026.
A softer move than the previous cutoff
This policy is less severe than WhatsApp’s earlier compatibility change. In June 2025, support ended for the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus because those devices could not be updated beyond iOS 15.0.
At the time, users of those phones had very limited options for continuing on the app, with WhatsApp Web remaining one of the few alternatives. The November 2026 change is different because it focuses on software version rather than removing support for a specific device group.
Meta says it reviews supported operating systems every year. The company typically drops versions with very small user bases or systems that no longer receive important security updates.
That review process also explains why WhatsApp keeps tightening its minimum iOS requirements over time. The company is aiming to maintain stability, security, and technical support on versions that are still actively maintained.
To reduce surprises, Meta will also send in-app reminders to affected users. Those notices are meant to give people enough time to update their devices and avoid a service interruption when the deadline arrives.
For iPhone owners who still depend on older hardware, checking the current iOS version is the safest move now. If the phone is not yet on iOS 15.5 or later, the update should be handled before WhatsApp’s new requirement takes effect.
