While speculation around a new Steam Machine continues, many Valve fans are looking in a different direction. They want a modern Steam Link instead, one that can stream games from a PC to a TV in a simple and official way.
That preference is not hard to understand. A Steam Machine is expected to come at a premium price, while many players already own a capable gaming PC and only need a reliable bridge to the living room.
A simpler answer for living-room gaming
The original Steam Link arrived in November 2015 as Valve’s first serious attempt to bring PC gaming into the lounge. The small device was designed to send games from a computer straight to a television without moving the main rig.
Valve ended the hardware product in November 2018, then shifted attention to the Steam Link app for phones, smart TVs, and other devices. That app still allows game streaming, but it does not recreate the convenience of a dedicated box under the TV.
Why an accessory can make more sense than a new machine
For players who already have a strong PC, a streaming accessory can look far more practical than another full gaming system. There are already alternatives such as Moonlight, Sunshine, and Nvidia Shield, but some fans still want a first-party option that feels easier to set up and more consistent.
A recent Reddit discussion showed that demand is still there for a solution from Valve itself. The recurring appeal is clear: users want something that works with minimal configuration and does not require technical experimentation to get started.
What fans want from a modern Steam Link
The biggest wish is a new Steam Link with more modern wireless hardware. Fans also want Ethernet, 4K support, low-decoding latency, HDR, and VRR so gaming on a TV feels smoother and more responsive.
Integration with the Steam Controller is another common request. Together, those features would let players enjoy Steam games on a television without adding a full gaming machine to the living room.
That is the core reason the idea keeps coming back. For many owners of powerful PCs, the missing piece is not another console-like box, but a stable and convenient streaming device that solves the living-room problem directly.
The problem Valve never fully escaped
Even so, the idea carries real baggage. The original Steam Link never became a major commercial hit and eventually sold at steep discounts, which still shapes how people judge the concept.
Network quality was one of its biggest weaknesses. Streaming performance could be inconsistent, and that made the experience less dependable than the idea sounded on paper.
Valve has not signaled whether it plans to revive Steam Link hardware, but the community discussion shows the demand has not disappeared. For many fans, a modern Steam Link still feels like the more sensible answer than a costly Steam Machine.
