WhatsApp Plus Arrives With A Paid Plan, But It Sells Style Instead Of Core Tools

WhatsApp is taking an unusual route with its first subscription package in India. The new WhatsApp Plus plan charges Rs 79 per month, yet it does not expand the app’s core messaging functions.

Instead of unlocking new ways to call, post status updates, or strengthen security, the package is built around appearance and personal control. End-to-end encryption remains free for all users, and the basic WhatsApp experience stays unchanged.

A subscription built around personalization

WhatsApp Plus is designed for users who want the app to feel more personal rather than more powerful. The package adds visual and customization tools that change how the app looks and sounds, without altering the main communication features people already use every day.

Among the headline additions are 18 new color themes, including Vibrant Blue, Royal Purple, Forest Green, and Fuchsia Pink. Users can also swap the standard app icon for one of 14 new designs, ranging from minimal looks to more artistic styles.

The customization options continue with 10 exclusive ringtones such as Flutter, Ripple, Meadow, and Carnival. Meta has also included a set of exclusive stickers for subscribers, reinforcing the plan’s focus on visual identity and personal expression.

Chat management gets a modest boost

One of the most practical changes is the ability to pin up to 20 chats at the top of the conversation list. That is a step above the standard limit in the regular version of the app.

Subscribers also get broader control over chat lists, allowing them to create and adjust lists based on their own preferences. For heavy WhatsApp users, that may make daily navigation feel more organized even though the core app remains the same.

Price, trial, and how it works

The subscription is priced at Rs 79 per month. Meta is offering the first month free, giving new users a chance to try the package before the charge begins.

After activation, the available benefits appear inside the app’s Settings menu under Subscriptions and then WhatsApp Plus. Payment is processed through the Google Play Store, and users confirm the purchase after reviewing the payment details.

The sign-up flow is simple: open Settings, go to Subscriptions, select WhatsApp Plus, tap Continue, and complete the payment. If the subscription activates successfully, a confirmation notification is sent and the features become accessible from the same menu path.

Meta’s wider subscription push also includes its other major social platforms, with WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook all part of the plan. The launch of WhatsApp Plus in India fits into that broader shift toward paid add-ons across Meta’s apps.

Who is likely to benefit most

The package is likely to appeal most to users who spend a lot of time in WhatsApp and care about how the app looks and feels. Themes, icons, stickers, and ringtones may be enough to make the service feel fresher without affecting how it works at its core.

Users who are already satisfied with the standard interface may see little reason to subscribe. WhatsApp Plus does not unlock the app’s basic calling tools, status features, or encryption, so the value proposition is mainly about comfort and customization rather than necessity.

That makes the new plan an optional layer on top of the familiar WhatsApp experience. Anyone who skips it can still use the app normally, with the same core features and the same free security protections.
