Players waiting for a proper PS5 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 may need to remain patient a little longer. The game is still playable on PS5 through backward compatibility, but it continues to run as the PS4 version and remains locked at 30 FPS.
That situation has kept speculation alive for a long time, especially because Rockstar Games has never made an official announcement about a native PS5 upgrade. Now, a new theory suggests that the timing of GTA 6 may be affecting when such an update could appear.
A delayed upgrade still has no confirmation
On X, insider NateTheHate was asked whether there was any fresh information about a PS5 update for Red Dead Redemption 2. His answer was brief: “no.” That response quickly revived discussion among fans who have been waiting for a clearer sign from Rockstar.
One user argued that the update might not exist at all, pointing out that GTA 6 is only a few months away from release. In that view, if a PS5 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 had been planned, Rockstar would likely have released it earlier.
NateTheHate offered a different interpretation. He suggested that the situation could change once Rockstar keeps GTA 6 on track for its November release window.
Why the GTA 6 schedule matters
According to the insider, the PS5 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 may already be finished and simply waiting for the right moment. In other words, the project may not be delayed because it is unfinished, but because Rockstar is holding it back strategically.
He also said that if GTA 6 slips again, Rockstar could use the PS5 update for Red Dead Redemption 2 to soften disappointment among fans. That would give the studio something meaningful to offer while the company focuses on its biggest upcoming launch.
For now, however, Rockstar appears to have little reason to release the update early. GTA 6 is still scheduled for November 19, and the studio remains centered on one of the most significant game launches the industry has seen.
That leaves Red Dead Redemption 2 fans in a waiting pattern that could last beyond the launch of GTA 6. Even after November, it would not be surprising if Rockstar waits several more months before rolling out a PS5 version for the western game.
The result is a scenario with two possibilities that are both unresolved. The update may already be ready behind the scenes, but Rockstar’s timing around GTA 6 may ultimately decide when players actually get it.
