From Under US$10,000 to US$960,000, Jensen Huang’s Jacket Defies Auction Estimate

A leather jacket associated with Jensen Huang sold for US$960,000 at Sotheby’s, despite a retail value for similar jackets said to be below US$10,000. The result, reached after competition from 45 bidders, placed the garment far beyond its initial auction estimate.

The jacket had been expected to fetch between US$40,000 and US$60,000. Instead, its final price rose well above that range, reflecting the collector appeal attached to Huang’s public image during the expansion of artificial intelligence.

Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s head of modern collectibles, said buyer interest exceeded the auction house’s highest expectations. “The response to this sale even surpassed our highest expectations,” Wachter said in a statement.

The item was worn by the Nvidia chief executive at a Foxconn event in Taipei, Taiwan, in 2023. Sotheby’s auctioned the jacket on Friday (17/7), with bidding ultimately pushing the sale to an unexpected level.

More Than a Personal Wardrobe Choice

Huang has worn dark leather jackets in public appearances for nearly 20 years. The clothing choice has become a recognizable part of his image as Nvidia became closely linked to the AI industry.

According to CNN Indonesia, citing CNBC, collectors have shown growing interest in objects associated with the AI era. Huang’s jacket carries a particular appeal because it connects a familiar visual signature with a leading figure in that sector.

The report listed Huang’s wealth at US$175 billion, or about Rp3.100 trillion. Yet his most recognizable visual trait has not been luxury accessories, but the dark leather jacket often seen on stage.

Huang said in a 2023 podcast that his wife and daughter have played a role in choosing his clothes. That personal detail adds another layer to a garment that has evolved into a public symbol.

A Jacket Recognized by Tech Leaders

The jacket had also drawn the attention of Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg in 2024. The two executives exchanged clothing in a gesture resembling the jersey swaps often seen among professional athletes.

On another occasion that year, Huang spontaneously gave Zuckerberg the jacket he was wearing while they appeared on the same stage. Zuckerberg said at the time that the jacket became more valuable because Huang had worn it himself.

Proceeds Directed to Innovation Programs

Sotheby’s said the proceeds from the sale will go to a philanthropic body supporting the Edge Institute. The nonprofit organization will use the funds for scholarships, grants, and residency programs.

The arrangement means the auction proceeds will support innovation-related initiatives rather than ending solely as a collectible transaction. The sale also reinforces how Huang’s leather jacket has become a recognized symbol within the technology world.
