BYD Atto 1 Adds LiDAR and 505 Km Range, Raising the Bar for Budget EVs

BYD is pushing the Atto 1 beyond the usual role of a compact city EV. The latest version brings a claimed driving range of up to 505 kilometers and adds LiDAR to selected variants, moving the model into a more advanced position in the affordable electric-car segment.

The update was shown at the Beijing Auto Show 2026 in China, where BYD presented revisions to efficiency, performance, and safety. Those changes are aimed at buyers who want a practical EV for daily use, but also expect longer range and more serious driver-assistance technology.

Longer range is the headline change

The clearest upgrade is the increase in range. BYD says the latest Atto 1 can travel up to 505 kilometers under CLTC testing, up from around 405 kilometers before.

That difference matters in the EV market, where charging frequency remains a key concern for everyday use. A larger range also gives the car more flexibility for city commuting and longer trips.

BYD also improved the powertrain. The electric motor now delivers a maximum output of 60 kW, or 80 HP, compared with 55 kW in the previous model.

The increase does not change the Atto 1’s basic role as a compact city car. Even so, it should give the car a sharper response in daily driving.

LiDAR brings a higher safety profile

The most notable technology upgrade is the addition of LiDAR on certain variants. That feature is usually associated with higher-tier electric vehicles, so its presence on an affordable model stands out.

BYD pairs it with the God’s Eye B active safety system. The setup is designed to help the vehicle read road conditions more effectively and support semi-autonomous driving features.

This move shows how low-cost EVs are starting to compete on more than just price and efficiency. Safety technology is becoming a bigger part of the appeal, and BYD is clearly using the Atto 1 to push that direction.

The timing also places the model in a more competitive Chinese market. Geely Xingyuan is said to have become the best-selling EV in China in 2025, which adds pressure to rivals in the same segment.

The exterior stays familiar, but details are refreshed

BYD has not redesigned the Atto 1 in a dramatic way. The car still keeps its compact city-car proportions, which remain well suited to urban driving.

Still, several visual changes make the latest version feel more modern. BYD has added a new red-orange color, 16-inch wheels with 175/55 tires, and an extra camera on the front fender.

There is also a small blue light at the rear and dual windshield wipers. These elements do not alter the car’s identity, but they reinforce the sense that the model has moved to a more mature stage.

The cabin gets practical updates

Inside, the focus is on usability. The steering wheel button layout has been simplified to make the cabin look cleaner and easier to use.

Some variants also receive a smart steering stalk. That feature helps manage certain vehicle functions more conveniently during everyday driving.

BYD has also adjusted the center console color to match the cabin interior. The result is a more coordinated look inside the car.

Several comfort-focused additions are included as well. These consist of a 50W wireless charger, a new cup holder, and a folding armrest.
