A smaller Dynamic Island is emerging as one of the most closely watched changes around the iPhone 18 Pro, and the latest prototype leak has added fresh fuel to that discussion. The shared images point to a narrower screen cutout, suggesting that Apple may be moving toward a cleaner front design without abandoning Face ID.
That speculation lines up with an earlier design-unit leak tied to the iPhone 18 Pro Max. In that version, the Dynamic Island was said to be 25-30 percent smaller, although the new images still need to be treated cautiously because they have not been verified by a source with a strong track record or by supply-chain reporting.
A cleaner front, but not a full redesign
The most notable idea behind the smaller cutout is not just cosmetic. Apple is reportedly looking to reduce the size of the Dynamic Island by moving the Face ID infrared illuminator under the display, while the camera and dot projector remain inside a small pill-shaped opening.
That approach would preserve Face ID functionality while making the front of the phone look less interrupted. Supply-chain information also suggests Apple may use laser micro-drilling to keep sensor accuracy intact even with components placed beneath the display layer.
The direction fits Apple’s longer-term goal of a true all-screen iPhone. The current leak does not confirm the final design, but it does suggest that Apple is steadily advancing toward that visual language.
Familiar exterior, major changes inside
Outside of the Dynamic Island discussion, the iPhone 18 Pro is said to keep a familiar look similar to the iPhone 17 Pro. That means the biggest changes are expected to happen inside the device rather than through a dramatic overhaul of the chassis.
One of the most significant rumored upgrades is the main camera with variable aperture. It is described as a first for the iPhone lineup and could give users better control over depth of field.
The device is also expected to debut the A20 SoC built on TSMC’s 2nm process. That chip is projected to deliver major efficiency gains, which means attention around the phone is not limited to design alone.
Rumor, not confirmation
The prototype photo circulating on social media should still be considered an early claim. There is no final confirmation yet for the exact size of the Dynamic Island or the finished shape of the front panel.
Even so, the match with the earlier design-unit leak makes the rumor more credible than a typical one-off image. For Apple watchers, that is enough to keep speculation alive about how soon the company can push the iPhone closer to a fully uninterrupted display.
Apple is expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September 2026.
