Spectera Brings Studio-Grade Clarity to Sam Smith’s Stage, Even in Dense RF Noise

For live shows that depend on dense wireless environments, the biggest challenge is often not volume or coverage, but stability. At Sam Smith’s residencies in New York and San Francisco, Sennheiser Spectera was chosen to handle that problem while also giving the monitor position a sound closer to high-end studio headphones.

The system’s appeal went beyond simple wireless reliability. It was selected because its two-way wideband digital design had to perform in spaces where RF traffic is already crowded with communication and broadcast activity, making conventional analog systems more vulnerable to interference.

A monitor sound that feels more natural

Sam Smith’s monitor engineer, Saul Skoutarides, said Spectera stood out because of its more natural character. He described the listening experience as much closer to a premium pair of studio headphones than to a typical live monitoring setup.

Skoutarides also pointed to the limits of older stereo monitoring approaches still built around traditional methods. In his view, Spectera delivered a more convincing stereo image, a lower noise floor, and no dependence on companders.

That difference was especially clear in the low end. Bass synths and sub patches, which play a major role in modern live production, stayed more stable and kept their shape better than they often do with standard analog systems.

Built for crowded RF conditions

New York can be a difficult environment for live audio crews because wireless devices and communication systems often compete in the same spectrum. In that kind of setting, engineers have very little room to spare if the signal begins to drift or break up.

Spectera addresses that challenge with wideband technology that does not rely on searching for a perfectly clean channel in the same way conventional gear does. That makes it more suitable for productions that need steady performance even when interference is part of the landscape.

For long rehearsals and demanding show days, cleaner audio and the absence of a noticeable noise floor also make monitoring easier for both crew and performers. The result is less strain during extended sessions and fewer distractions from the system itself.

Efficiency during fast-paced live production

Beyond sound quality, Spectera also brings operational advantages through its bidirectional wireless system. Devices can synchronize automatically, which is useful when concert and festival crews are working through quick stage changes.

When equipment returns into range of the base station, synchronization can happen without repeated manual setup. That reduces the chance of technical errors and helps keep the workflow moving in high-pressure live environments.

The system also simplifies stage infrastructure. Instead of heavy RF cabling such as LMR400, Spectera can work with standard Cat 5 cable, which makes deployment more practical for touring productions.

A studio mindset brought into the arena

Spectera’s support for MADI integration and ultra-low latency mode further helps maintain the level of precision needed in live performance. Those elements matter when timing and synchronization have to stay tight across a full production.
