The next wave of foldables may be defined less by futuristic styling and more by practicality. Honor is reportedly testing a wide-screen foldable that pairs a larger outer display with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, a combination that could help reshape the premium segment.
Industry attention is building around the device because its approach appears more user-friendly than many current foldables. Instead of treating the cover screen as a secondary feature, the design is said to give everyday tasks more room before the phone is even unfolded.
A wider cover display is the key shift
The device under test is said to feature a main display of around 7.6 inches. Its outer screen is expected to measure about 5.5 inches, which is notably more generous than the narrower cover panels still common on many foldables.
That size balance matters for routine use. A wider outer display can make messaging, social media, app browsing, and short video playback feel less cramped, reducing the need to open the device every time.
This direction suggests that foldables are moving toward stronger ergonomics and better daily usability. The goal is no longer just to impress with a folding mechanism, but to make the closed phone experience genuinely useful.
Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 sits at the center
One of the most notable elements tied to Honor’s test device is Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. The chip is expected to use a 2-nanometer process, which is widely associated with better performance and improved power efficiency compared with earlier generations.
That positioning gives the device a clear premium angle. A foldable with a broader screen and next-generation Qualcomm silicon would not be aimed only at style-conscious buyers, but also at users who expect high-end speed and efficiency from the category.
Leaker Digital Chat Station was the first to mention that a manufacturer was testing a wide-screen foldable with Qualcomm’s latest generation chip, though the brand was not named directly. Later clues pointed toward Honor, leading observers to believe the company is preparing a major move in the segment.
UTG is also expected to play a role
Beyond the screen dimensions, the device is also expected to use Ultra-Thin Glass, or UTG. The material has become a key part of premium foldable construction because it helps reduce the visible crease across the middle of the screen.
UTG is also associated with better visual quality and a more natural touch feel. That matters in a category where the foldable display must still feel as close as possible to a conventional smartphone panel.
Creasing remains one of the biggest challenges for foldable phones. For that reason, continued development of UTG remains important as manufacturers try to improve durability and the overall viewing experience.
A crowded premium field is already taking shape
