Steam Deck Can Run Lego Batman Smoothly, But Only After Cutting The Heaviest Effects

For Steam Deck owners, Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight appears to be more than playable. With the right settings, the game can run smoothly on Valve’s handheld without sacrificing too much visual clarity.

That matters because the game is built with a surprisingly ambitious visual style for a LEGO title. Character models are detailed, environments can be destroyed, and lighting and weather effects add extra strain when Gotham fills with action.

Performance depends on restraint

The biggest performance problems show up when dynamic effects, weather, and busy combat scenes happen at the same time. In open areas or during large fights, the Steam Deck can struggle if the graphics options are left too high.

For that reason, the best approach is not to push for maximum visual flair. Instead, the goal is to cut the features that matter least on a small screen while keeping the image readable at 800p.

The recommended setup

The base configuration starts with Windowed Fullscreen, VSync turned off, and the frame rate left Unlimited. Resolution should be set to 1280 x 800, while HUD Visibility uses the Dynamic option.

Display Calibration stays at Default. Anti-Aliasing uses TSR, with Anti-Aliasing Base Resolution set to 100%, even though both options are shown as greyed out.

Upscaling plays a central role in this setup. Intel XeSS is recommended in Quality mode, while Frame Generation should remain off.

Most graphics options should stay low

The best graphics preset is Custom, with most settings reduced to Low. Lighting Quality, Shadows, Textures, Material Quality, LEGO Mesh Quality, Effects, Reflections, and Population Quality are all set to Low.

View Distance and Streaming Distance are both kept at Near. Anisotropic Filtering is set to 1 to keep the device under less pressure.

Effects worth turning off

Several visual effects are better disabled if stability is the priority. Distance Field Ambient Occlusion and Post Processing are both recommended Off in this configuration.

Fullscreen Effects also deliver major performance savings when disabled. Fullscreen Effects Enabled should be Off, along with Motion Blur, Vignettes, Weather Effects, Repeating Visual Effects, Bloom, and Screen Space Ambient Occlusion.

Those cuts do reduce the cinematic look. In return, the image becomes cleaner and the action is easier to read on the Steam Deck display.

What to expect from performance

With low settings and Intel XeSS on Quality, the game is said to deliver performance above 50 FPS. That makes exploration and combat feel noticeably more responsive.

Even so, the safest choice is still to lock the game to 30 FPS. That option is better for players who value consistent frame pacing over higher numbers that move up and down.

A middle ground is also possible for players who want slightly better visuals. Texture can be raised to Medium and some effects can be re-enabled, although performance then falls into the 30 to 40 FPS range.

A route to 60 FPS, with trade-offs

There is also another path for players chasing higher frame rates. The method involves enabling Lossless Scaling, downloading the app from Steam, and running it through Decky Loader on the Steam Deck.

That approach is not free of compromise. The reported boost in performance can lower overall image quality, so it suits players who care more about smoothness than visual fidelity.

Even with many settings reduced, Legacy of the Dark Knight still seems well suited to the Steam Deck. By disabling heavy effects, keeping the native 1280 x 800 resolution, and relying on Intel XeSS Quality, Gotham remains manageable without pushing the handheld too hard.
