Samsung’s next major foldable may be taking a far less familiar path. Leaked dummy units suggest that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide abandons the tall book-style shape many users expect and instead opens into something much closer to a compact square.
That shift in proportions is the most striking part of the leak. Rather than chasing a slimmer silhouette above all else, Samsung appears to be testing a format that could better suit reading, visual work, and multitasking.
A Foldable That Looks More Like a Mini Passport
The leaked models were shared by Sonny Dickson and Ice Universe, two leakers often associated with Samsung device rumors. In the images and videos, Samsung’s 2026 foldable lineup is shown together, including the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide, and Galaxy Z Flip 8.
Among them, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide stands out the most. When unfolded, it is said to be shorter vertically and much wider horizontally than the regular Fold, giving it a shape that resembles a mini passport or a small wallet more than a conventional foldable phone.
The inner display ratio is reported to be 4:3. That format is closer to an iPad or a classic tablet layout, and it is considered more comfortable for documents, web browsing, video playback, and app switching because it reduces the need for constant scrolling on a narrow tall screen.
The Trade-Off Appears on the Camera Side
A major design change usually comes with compromise, and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide seems to show that in its camera layout. The dummy unit features a pill-shaped module with two sensors, without extra telephoto or ultra-wide lenses.
That limitation is tied to internal space constraints inside a body that is wide but still thin. Samsung appears to be balancing structure and thickness, even if that means giving up some photographic flexibility.
For some premium users, that could be a notable drawback. At the same time, the direction also suggests Samsung may be positioning the device more as a visual productivity tool than as a camera-first flagship.
A Magnetic Ring on the Back Raises Another Question
Another detail drawing attention is the circular ring pattern on the back of the dummy unit. The design has fueled speculation about magnetic wireless charging support based on the Qi2 standard.
If that feature makes it into the final product, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide would become Samsung’s first foldable with internal magnets. SamMobile has noted, however, that dummy-unit features do not always make it to the finished device, since Samsung often tests multiple concepts before settling on a final design.
A magnetic system would also open the door to a broader accessory ecosystem. The device could work with magnetic mounts and compact tripods if Samsung adopts the feature.
Part of a Larger Unpacked Launch
Samsung has confirmed a global Unpacked event in London on 22 July 2026. At that event, the company is expected to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide, and Galaxy Z Flip 8 together.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is said to be only a minor upgrade over the Fold 7, while the Galaxy Z Flip 8 is reportedly very close in design to the Flip 7. Outside the foldable lineup, Samsung is also expected to introduce the Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Glasses, its first AR glasses.
That lineup points to a more connected ecosystem strategy. Samsung seems to be aligning wearables, foldables, and AI into a single experience that works across devices.
Price and Market Pressure Remain Real
Despite the unusual design, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide still faces major hurdles in the premium market. One of them is price, which is expected to sit above $2,000.
Another challenge is convincing buyers that the new 4:3 format offers enough value over traditional foldables. The layout may be better for productivity, but consumers will still need a reason to accept a new shape and a high price at the same time.
Competition is also heating up. Apple is said to be targeting a similar ratio with the iPhone Ultra, adding pressure to Samsung’s foldable strategy.
Ice Universe has said Samsung’s team is very fond of the device, which leaves open the possibility that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide could become a more important product than a simple design experiment.
