Apple’s Next Siri Takes Shape With Gemini, As WWDC 2026 Tests Tim Cook’s Legacy

Apple’s upcoming WWDC 2026 is shaping up to be more than a routine software showcase. The event is now viewed as one of the company’s most consequential moments in years, with expectations centered on whether Apple can finally make Apple Intelligence feel truly useful on consumer devices.

The keynote is scheduled for June 8, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time. Apple will stream the presentation through YouTube, the Apple TV app, and the Apple Event website.

A major test for Apple’s AI direction

The pressure around WWDC 2026 comes not only from the scale of the announcements, but also from the leadership context surrounding them. The event is being described as Tim Cook’s last WWDC, which adds another layer of importance to the company’s presentation.

At the same time, Apple needs to convince users that its AI ambitions are more than marketing language. The company has been promising a stronger Apple Intelligence experience, and this event is expected to show how far that effort has progressed inside everyday products.

Siri is expected to take the spotlight

The biggest attention is on a redesigned Siri. The new version is said to gain a much broader understanding of user context by drawing on email, messages, files, photos, and other data.

That approach would allow Siri to summarize information, analyze files, and control devices on iPhone with greater awareness of what the user is doing. Its capabilities are also expected to extend to on-screen content, making the assistant more responsive to what appears in front of the user.

One example circulating shows Siri reading a message that contains an address and then adding it directly to a contact. That kind of action reflects a more practical role for the assistant, beyond simple voice commands.

A more modern interface for Siri

Apple is also said to be changing how Siri appears inside the system. The new Siri would arrive as a separate app in Apple’s latest operating system, complete with an “Ask Siri” bar for typed commands.

Voice input is still part of the plan, but Apple is also preparing a workflow for photos, PDFs, and other documents to be submitted for processing. That brings Siri closer to the style of modern AI chat tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini.

Gemini becomes part of the foundation

To power the next version of Siri, Apple is working with Google. Google and Apple have said that the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Gemini, making it the engine behind future Apple Intelligence features.

That move signals that Apple is willing to rely on outside AI technology to strengthen its own foundation. It also places Apple in more direct competition with AI assistants that have already developed stronger market presence.

More than Siri: the wider software update

WWDC 2026 will not be limited to Siri and Apple Intelligence. As with Apple’s annual developer conference tradition, the company is expected to announce major updates across its software lineup.

The list includes iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27, and visionOS 27. After the main presentation, Apple is expected to release a developer beta, while the public beta for iOS 27 is said to arrive in July 2026 before a stable release in the fall.

Visual Intelligence and Photos also get upgrades

Apple Intelligence changes are also expected to reach other apps and tools. Visual Intelligence is reportedly moving from the iPhone’s Camera Control button into the Camera app itself, which should make it easier to access.

The feature is also being expanded for more everyday tasks. In iOS 27, it is said to recognize nutrition information on food packaging and scan phone numbers and addresses on business cards for automatic saving into contacts.

The Photos app is also expected to receive AI-based editing tools. Among the planned options are background expansion and changes to a photo’s perspective after the image has been taken.

Writing tools are getting smarter too

Apple is reportedly testing a more capable version of Writing Tools. Bloomberg says there will be a “Write with Siri” toggle at the top of the keyboard, along with a “Help Me Write” button when Siri is activated in an active text field.

Apple is also said to be adding a grammar checker alongside spell checking. Users will still have full control over whether to accept or reject the AI’s suggestions.

Hints of a foldable future

Beyond the software announcements, Apple is also laying the groundwork for new hardware directions. The company’s first foldable iPhone is expected in September 2026, and some of its experience is said to be previewed earlier through iOS 27.

Apple is reportedly preparing a new interface and new interaction patterns for a larger screen. One rumored feature is split screen support, which is not available on regular iPhones.

That makes WWDC 2026 more than a yearly developer gathering. It is set to serve as a critical public test of Apple’s next phase, from a Siri powered by Gemini to the company’s broader software strategy for its next generation of devices.
