Spotify users across multiple countries reported a major service disruption on 16 June 2026, with music failing to play and playlists becoming inaccessible. The outage affected listeners in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, and India, pointing to a widespread problem rather than a local network issue.
Downdetector indicated that the disruption was first detected around 6:58 PM IST, and reports quickly climbed in several regions. The scale of complaints suggested that the issue was affecting core Spotify functions at the same time.
Playback Problems Spread Beyond One Feature
For many users, the most visible issue was simple: tracks would not start. Songs reportedly stalled at 0:00 with no audio output, while album artwork failed to appear normally in some cases.
The impact was not limited to music playback. Users also reported trouble accessing Spotify’s playlists, music library, podcasts, and audiobooks, while some said the web version was difficult to open as well.
In some cases, the app still loaded and playlists remained visible on mobile, but the selected track would not move beyond the start of the song. That split experience made the outage feel inconsistent from one user to another, even though the service disruption was happening at the same time.
Complaint Volume Pointed to a Broader Service Failure
Downdetector recorded more than 5,000 reports from the United States and around 1,212 reports from India. The numbers reinforced the view that the problem was not isolated to a single market or device type.
StatusIsDown, through its X account @status_is_down, also highlighted the spike in complaints and said Spotify was reportedly down for thousands of listeners simultaneously. The report added another layer to the picture already visible in user complaints and outage-tracking data.
Some Signs of Recovery, But Not Everywhere
By the time reports continued to circulate, some users in certain regions were beginning to see partial recovery after roughly two and a half hours of downtime. Even so, the restoration was not uniform, and many listeners were still seeing broken playback or incomplete access to their libraries.
Spotify had not issued a formal explanation for the disruption while the complaints were rising. That left users relying on outage trackers and their own app behavior to understand what was happening.
The uneven recovery meant the experience could differ depending on location. Some listeners were able to use the service again, while others continued to face frozen songs, missing content, or inaccessible libraries as the backend recovery process appeared to continue.
