MG ADAPT Brings Four Powertrains Together, Setting Up MG’s Next EV Push

MG is preparing to build future electrified vehicles around a single architecture rather than separate foundations for each powertrain. The new MG ADAPT platform supports electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and range-extender electric vehicles.

The approach gives JSW MG Motor India a common technical base for models with different propulsion systems. It also positions the company to offer broader new-energy vehicle choices as consumer preferences evolve in India.

A Platform Designed for Different Electrification Routes

MG ADAPT stands for Advance Drive Architecture Platform Technology. JSW MG Motor India describes it as India’s first multi-new-energy-vehicle platform capable of supporting EVs, HEVs, PHEVs, and REEVs.

Powertrain TypeRoleCore Characteristic
EVPure electric propulsionElectric motor provides vehicle drive
HEVHybrid electric propulsionEngine and electric motor work within a hybrid system
PHEVPlug-in hybrid propulsionHybrid system with externally rechargeable battery
REEVRange-extender electric propulsionDesigned to extend electric driving range

Using one architecture for these systems can reduce the need to begin development from the ground up for every powertrain type. Gizmochina reported that MG also intends the platform to shorten product development cycles.

The company is targeting improvements in driving range, charging speed, efficiency, performance, safety, and ride refinement through the new architecture. These objectives cover both the electric hardware and the way energy is managed while driving.

Four Driving Modes Work Automatically

MG ADAPT can automatically switch among four operating modes based on road conditions and driver demand. The modes determine whether the electric motor, engine, or both are used to move the vehicle.

Driving ModeHow It OperatesIntended Situation
Pure Electric DriveThe vehicle runs in full electric modeCity driving
Series Hybrid DriveThe engine charges the battery while the motor drives the wheelsMaintaining electric power supply
Parallel Hybrid DriveThe engine and motor work togetherHigher power demand
Engine Direct DriveThe engine drives the vehicle directlyEfficient highway travel

Pure Electric Drive is intended for urban use, where the vehicle can operate solely on electric power. In Series Hybrid Drive, the combustion engine acts as a battery charger while the electric motor continues to propel the wheels.

Parallel Hybrid Drive combines output from the engine and electric motor when more power is required. Engine Direct Drive, meanwhile, is intended to provide efficient operation during highway travel.

Dedicated Hardware and Energy Control

The platform combines a dedicated hybrid engine, a dedicated battery system, and India’s first 10-in-1 Intelligent Electric Drive Unit. It also includes an Electromagnetic Dedicated Hybrid Transmission that MG describes as the world’s first.

An Intelligent Energy Management System oversees the hardware and balances power supply between the engine, battery, and electric motor. This system is central to coordinating the platform’s different propulsion and driving modes.

JSW MG Motor India has confirmed that one EV model and one PHEV model based on MG ADAPT will debut in fiscal year 2026-27. Those vehicles will mark the first confirmed applications of the platform in MG’s future India product strategy.

By consolidating several electrification technologies into one base, MG is seeking to avoid splitting development across too many separate architectures. The result is a platform intended to support a wider range of new-energy vehicles from a shared foundation.
