Realme’s India Software Shift Could Put ColorOS 17 on Eligible Older Phones

Realme is preparing a software transition in India that may extend beyond its upcoming phones. Older devices that remain eligible for operating system updates are also expected to move from Realme UI to ColorOS 17.

The change would make ColorOS 17 the software interface for future Realme handsets in India. According to a report cited by Gadgets360, the plan is intended to cover both new products and eligible existing models.

The immediate effect for users may be less dramatic than the name change suggests. Realme UI and ColorOS have long shared similar designs and features, meaning the transition is expected to occur mainly at the platform and development level.

Realme has not provided a full list of older phones that will receive ColorOS 17. Eligibility will depend on whether a device still qualifies for an operating system update.

GSMArena reported that the decision aligns with earlier information about combining Realme UI with Oppo’s software platform. The stated aim is to reduce research and development costs while making updates easier to manage.

A shared platform could also simplify software development by reducing duplicated work. Realme and Oppo have maintained separate interface identities despite the similarities between their software experiences.

The switch would not be Realme’s first association with ColorOS. Early Realme phones used ColorOS before the company introduced Realme UI in 2020.

Realme 3 Pro and Realme XT were identified as the first devices to receive Realme UI. Realme C3, meanwhile, was the first smartphone to launch with the interface installed from the outset.

India Is the Confirmed Market for Now

The reported confirmation currently applies only to India. There is no confirmation that other markets will follow, although a broader rollout remains possible later.

Realme recently introduced the Realme Narzo 100x 5G in India with Realme UI 7.0 based on Android 16. The phone carries a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chip, dual 50 MP rear cameras, an 8,000 mAh battery, and 45 W fast charging.

The Narzo model illustrates the transitional period Realme is entering in India. Newer devices can still arrive with Realme UI while the company prepares the move to ColorOS 17 for future software updates.
