The strongest sign that Huawei is reshaping the Nova 16 lineup is not a new camera leak or a display detail, but the possible disappearance of the Ultra name. Instead of Huawei Nova 16 Ultra, the top model is now being linked to a new label: Huawei Pura Nova 16 Pro Max.
That naming shift is still unconfirmed, but it suggests Huawei may be reworking how it positions the upper tier of the series. The “Pura” branding also gives the leak a broader meaning, since it hints at a possible new naming direction for part of the Nova family.
A calmer look for the top model
The latest color information adds another layer to that repositioning. Huawei Nova 16 and Nova 16 Pro are said to come in four color choices: black, white, blue, and one gradient version.
The Pro Max model, by contrast, is reportedly more restrained. It is said to arrive only in black, white, and blue, with no gradient option at all.
That makes the most premium variant look visually simpler than its siblings. If accurate, the choice would set the top model apart through a cleaner design direction rather than through a more expressive finish.
Early hardware clues point to a flagship class device
Beyond naming and color, the leaked prototype has already revealed several expected hardware traits. Digital Chat Station says Huawei is preparing a device with a 6.84-inch 1.5K LTPO display and a flagship “series 9” processor, likely referring to a Kirin 9000-series chip.
Battery capacity is also shaping up to be one of the headline features. The same leak points to a battery of around 7000mAh, which would place the device among the larger-capacity phones in its category.
That combination of a large screen and a jumbo battery reinforces the idea that the top Nova 16 model is being aimed closer to flagship territory. Huawei appears to be preparing a device that leans on endurance and premium positioning at the same time.
Camera hardware and wireless charging are also in play
The imaging setup is said to be ambitious as well. The phone is reportedly equipped with a 50-megapixel main camera using a sensor of about 1/1.3 inches, alongside a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto camera and a multispectral sensor.
Wireless charging is also mentioned among the planned features. Together, those details make the top Nova 16 variant feel more serious than earlier generations, at least on paper.
The package suggests Huawei is not relying on a new badge alone. The reported hardware mix points to a more competitive device overall, with premium features distributed across display, battery, and camera systems.
A clearer split from Nova 15
The rumored changes make more sense when viewed against Nova 15. That line launched at the end of last year with Kirin 8020 and 9010S chipsets, and an starting price of 2699 yuan.
In that generation, the Ultra model stood out more for its dual “red maple leaf” design than for a major hardware leap. The shift from Ultra to Pro Max on Nova 16 may therefore reflect a more deliberate repositioning, both in branding and in product differentiation.
Huawei has not confirmed the final name, full specifications, or the design direction for Nova 16. For now, Pro Max, the color lineup, and the possible absence of Ultra remain in the realm of early leaks.
