Alex Eala Stuns Svitolina Again, Breakthrough Berlin Run Reaches the Semifinals

Alex Eala’s latest run in Berlin has turned into another signature statement, with the Filipina defeating world No. 8 Elina Svitolina to reach the semifinals of the 2026 Berlin Open. The 6-3, 6-4 win came after she had already taken down Elena Rybakina, extending a breakthrough week that is drawing fresh attention.

The result also marked Eala’s sixth victory over a top-10 opponent, and her first back-to-back wins against that level of competition since the 2025 Miami Open, when she beat Madison Keys and Iga Świątek in succession. For a player still building her place among the sport’s elite, the timing made the win especially meaningful.

A fast start set the tone

Eala opened with confidence at Steffi Graf Stadion, racing to a 3-0 lead in the first set after breaking in the second game and holding twice. Svitolina, a former world No. 3, later broke in the seventh game to narrow the gap, but Eala answered immediately with another break before serving out the set 6-3.

The numbers backed up the control she showed early. She finished the opener with a better first-serve percentage than Svitolina, 69% to 62%, and led points won 15-11.

Long rallies, then another surge

The second set opened with a marathon 18-point game, which Eala won to earn an early break. She then held serve to go up 2-0, before Svitolina responded by holding and breaking back to level the set at 2-2.

Eala quickly regained momentum, breaking in the fifth and seventh games around two holds to move ahead 5-2. Svitolina delayed the finish by breaking back in the eighth and holding for 5-4, but Eala stayed composed and served out the match in the 10th game.

ESPN reported that the 21-year-old’s returning was a major factor in the win, as she finished with a 13-9 edge on first-serve returns and a 21-19 edge on second-serve returns. It was the kind of all-court response that has fueled her rapid rise this week.

Nosková waits next

Eala now moves into the semifinals against world No. 13 Linda Nosková. She will also be trying to improve her record against Czech players, where she currently stands at 1-13.

For Eala, the Berlin Open has become another reminder that her best results can still come against the biggest names on tour. The challenge now is whether she can turn another upset-filled run into a place in the final.
