Manchester United Close In On Tielemans, Villa May Have Little Choice

Manchester United are moving to finalise a surprise deal for Youri Tielemans, with Aston Villa’s £35million release clause giving them a clear route to the midfielder. The Belgium international favours a switch to Old Trafford, and contact is ongoing between all parties.

The move would give United a proven Premier League midfielder at a time when they are trying to strengthen a key area of the squad. It also comes after the club decided to step away from their pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson for the time being.

Why Tielemans has become a realistic target

Villa do not want to sell Tielemans and had already offered him new terms months ago, but the release clause changes the picture. The 29-year-old is under contract until June 2028, yet the mechanism may leave Villa with limited room to block a move if United move quickly.

Tielemans joined Villa from Leicester City on a free transfer in the summer of 2023 and has remained an important figure in Unai Emery’s side. During the 2025-26 campaign, he helped Villa qualify for the Champions League and win the Europa League, producing two goals and seven assists in 35 appearances in all competitions.

United’s midfield rebuild continues

United’s search for midfield reinforcements has widened after several moving parts this summer. They had agreed personal terms and a €40.5million fixed fee plus €4.5million in add-ons for Ederson, with initial medical tests already completed before the Brazilian received a late call-up to his country’s World Cup squad.

The club continued background work while the tournament played out and were ready to react once the second round of medical checks were completed afterwards. A later revisit to the Ederson situation has not been ruled out, even as United now push ahead with other options.

The need for reinforcements has grown after Casemiro’s departure and a knee-ligament injury to Manuel Ugarte during Uruguay’s World Cup group-stage loss to Spain. United have already brought in Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £48million plus £2million in bonuses, and they also chased Elliot Anderson before he joined Manchester City for £116million.

Why Tielemans stands out for United

As The Athletic noted, Unai Emery wanted to build around a Villa midfield trio of Tielemans, Boubacar Kamara and Amadou Onana, although Onana is set for a long spell out after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in Belgium’s World Cup win over the United States.

Tielemans also captained Belgium during their run to the quarter-finals and scored twice in a 3-2 comeback win over Senegal in the round of 32. He missed Friday’s defeat by Spain after picking up an injury in the warm-up, but his standing as an experienced top-flight midfielder has made him attractive to United.

That experience is a major part of the appeal. Tielemans is viewed as a strong progressive passer who can break lines and help move the ball quickly, while also bringing duel-winning ability and ground coverage in possession and out of it.
