Marathon Game Director Joseph Ziegler Leaves Bungie as Season 3 Nears

Joseph Ziegler is leaving Bungie and stepping down as game director of Marathon on July 17, 2026. His departure comes while the extraction shooter continues through Season 2 and approaches Season 3 in September.

Ziegler announced the move in a statement posted on X, saying assistant game director Del Chafe III will take over the role. Chafe will guide the game alongside creative director Julia Nardin.

Ziegler said Chafe and Nardin have already held strong leadership responsibilities within the team. “Both of them have been operating in a strong leadership capacity for the team and are ready to guide Marathon into the next chapter with an even better and brighter future,” he said.

He did not give a reason for his decision, but said he is heading “to something new, somewhere else.” Ziegler also promised to reveal more about his next move soon.

The outgoing director thanked players for supporting the team’s effort to build what he called a dark and terrifying space survival frontier. He said the mission would continue in “new and surprising ways” under the remaining leadership team.

A Difficult Period for Bungie

The leadership change arrives after several difficult months for Marathon and Bungie. Sony reported a $765 million impairment loss tied to Bungie’s underperformance in May, according to IGN.

Despite a committed group of players supporting the game since its March 2026 launch, some online discussion has questioned its future. That reaction has also been shaped by the announcement that support for Destiny 2 had come to an end.

Sony announced significant layoffs at Bungie last month, saying the cuts affected most of the Destiny team and some Marathon team members. The reductions reportedly affected nearly 300 employees at Bungie’s Bellevue, Washington location alone.

Last week, Sony settled a lawsuit with former Marathon game director Christopher Barrett. Barrett had been fired after accusations of sexual misconduct.

Bungie has continued to discuss larger ideas for Marathon, including story content planned for the next few years. IGN previously gave the game a 9/10 review, while a former Destiny community manager has urged Bungie fans to support the sci-fi shooter.
