Energizer is putting child safety at the center of its latest coin battery design, adding multiple layers meant to reduce the risk of accidental swallowing. The new battery line is aimed at small devices that are common in everyday homes, including Apple AirTag and watches.
The concern is not limited to the battery itself. Small coin cells can be easy to reach in households with children, which makes both packaging and product design part of the safety equation.
Three layers of protection
Energizer says the new batteries use a bitter coating that returns from previous generations. The idea is simple: if a child puts the battery in the mouth, the unpleasant taste should encourage spitting it out rather than swallowing it.
A second layer sits outside the battery in the packaging. Energizer describes it as extremely difficult for children to open, which helps reduce access before the battery is even used.
The third safeguard is a feature called “color alarm.” When the battery comes into contact with saliva, the surface of the mouth turns blue within seconds, giving parents a faster visual warning that a battery may have been placed in a child’s mouth.
Built for everyday small devices
The new batteries are positioned for compact electronics that rely on coin cells. Apple AirTag and watches fit that category because both depend on small batteries and are often used in daily routines.
That combination of small size and frequent use is part of why coin batteries draw attention in homes with children. Energizer is presenting the new line as an added option for parents who want more protection around such devices.
Available formats
Energizer is offering its Ultimate Child Shield coin batteries in three versions: CR2016, CR2024, and CR2032. These are widely used coin cell formats found in a range of small devices.
The company has not confirmed when the batteries will reach stores. More information about Ultimate Child Shield is available on Energizer’s website.
