Garmin’s Fenix 8 Beta Update Targets Navigation Crashes and Random Restarts

Garmin has started rolling out a new software update for its flagship smartwatch lineup, and the most notable fix is aimed at a problem that matters directly to outdoor users. The latest beta build addresses a crash that could happen while calculating a route back to the starting point, a scenario that many runners, hikers, and navigators rely on.

The update is still limited in reach. Garmin is distributing it over the air only to users enrolled in the beta program, so it is not yet available to the wider public.

Wide coverage across the Fenix 8 family

The release is not restricted to one model. Garmin is preparing it for the full Fenix 8 range, including Fenix 8 Solar, Fenix 8 AMOLED, Fenix 8 Pro, Fenix 8 MicroLED, Enduro 3, Quatix 8, and Fenix E.

For beta users, installation is described as straightforward. Even so, the beta status comes with a tradeoff, since ECG and dive functions remain disabled on beta software, including version 22.29.

Crash and restart issues get attention

The changelog for this build includes 16 items, which is more than the previous beta, 22.28. Among the changes, Garmin also fixed several cases that could previously lead to a smartwatch restart, although the list does not specify whether every issue always triggered an immediate reboot.

That focus suggests the update is aimed less at adding new features and more at improving stability during real-world use. For owners who depend on their watch in active settings, fewer crashes and restarts can make a noticeable difference.

Smaller fixes also make the cut

Not all of the changes target core navigation behavior. On Tactix 8, Garmin also addressed an issue related to changing the color display at night.

Taken together, the fixes point to a broader effort to smooth out everyday friction across the flagship line. The update appears designed to make the devices feel more reliable during both exercise and routine use, even before the software reaches users outside the beta channel.

For now, anyone waiting for the stable release will need to remain patient while Garmin keeps testing the build through its beta rollout.
