DJI’s next pocket vlogging camera is shaping up to be more than a routine refresh. The standout detail around Osmo Pocket 4P is not just the rumored 3x telephoto lens, but a major jump in dynamic range that could make everyday footage look far more cinematic.
That improvement matters because dynamic range directly affects how well a camera handles difficult lighting. According to Adam Juniper of Digital Camera World, Osmo Pocket 4P supports 17 stops of dynamic range on its main 1-inch-style lens, which places it above the Osmo Pocket 4’s 14 stops.
A bigger leap than it first appears
The number may sound technical, but the practical impact is clear for video creators. Osmo Pocket 4 already represented a meaningful step up from Osmo Pocket 3, and the move to 17 stops pushes the new model further into higher-end territory.
That makes the new camera feel less like a cosmetic update and more like a deliberate effort to improve image quality in demanding shooting conditions. DJI appears to be aiming for footage that holds up better in highlights and shadows, especially when the light is uneven or changing quickly.
Telephoto support adds another layer
The 3x telephoto lens also gives Osmo Pocket 4P a second headline feature. While the dynamic range upgrade is the more important shift for image quality, the telephoto option suggests DJI wants the camera to be more versatile for different kinds of vlogging setups.
Together, the two features point to a pocket camera that is not only easier to carry, but also more flexible when the scene calls for a different perspective. That combination strengthens the impression that DJI is targeting creators who want a compact device without giving up visual reach.
Launch signals are already visible
DJI has also started teasing the camera in public. Its appearance at the Cannes Film Festival helped fuel expectations that a broader announcement would follow, and many observers had been looking toward 14 May after the first red-carpet hints on 11 May.
The company has not released full details yet, but images have reportedly already been shared with some media outlets. That has made the camera’s design easier to recognize while keeping the full spec sheet under wraps.
What is still unknown
Even with the dynamic range confirmed as the key upgrade, other hardware details for Osmo Pocket 4P remain undisclosed. That keeps attention fixed on the differences that are already known, especially the gap between this model and Osmo Pocket 4.
The “4P” name has also revived earlier speculation that the device may have been called Osmo Pocket 4 Pro at one point. Whatever the name change may suggest, the position of the camera within DJI’s vlogging lineup is becoming clearer.
DJI typically launches new vlogging cameras on roughly a two-year cadence, so this arrival feels earlier than expected, especially after Osmo Pocket 4 replaced Osmo Pocket 3 in markets where it is available, excluding the US. For now, the most important signals are still the same: Osmo Pocket 4P is getting close to its official debut, and its 17-stop dynamic range is the upgrade most likely to define how it performs.
