Sony has expanded its 1000X audio line with 1000X THE COLLEXION, a premium edition that is designed to sit above the WH-1000XM6 rather than replace it. The positioning is deliberate, with Sony using the model to mark a decade of the 1000X series while pushing the product into a more luxurious segment of the wireless headphone market.
The pricing alone shows how far Sony is taking that approach. The headphone costs 649 US dollars in the United States, 549 pounds in the United Kingdom, and 629 euros in Europe, placing it above the WH-1000XM6 and closer to premium rivals such as Apple AirPods Max 2.
A more luxurious design direction
Sony has put clear emphasis on the physical experience of the headphones. The redesigned metal headband is paired with larger earcups and softer padding, which are intended to improve comfort during longer listening sessions.
The outer finish also moves toward a more refined feel, with a softer texture and a leather-like impression. Sony additionally includes replaceable ear pads, a detail that supports long-term use and fits the product’s premium positioning.
Even the carrying case has been treated as part of the upgrade. It has a cleaner and more premium appearance, reinforcing the idea that this model is meant to feel more exclusive than a standard refresh.
Updated audio hardware and wireless features
Inside the headphones, Sony uses a new 30mm unidirectional carbon fiber driver. That driver works alongside the QN3 noise cancellation processor and the V3 co-processor, a combination Sony says improves clarity and overall audio performance.
The model also includes AI-based audio processing improvements. For wireless connectivity, it supports LDAC, AAC, SBC, and LC3, while Bluetooth 6 and multipoint connectivity help it stay connected to more than one audio source.
Sony also includes 360 Upmix for spatial audio and wear detection for more convenient everyday use. These additions keep the product aligned with the company’s flagship audio strategy while still centering the experience on wireless listening.
Noise cancellation and call quality remain central
Adaptive active noise cancellation is one of the main selling points of 1000X THE COLLEXION. Sony supports that system with 12 microphones, aiming for strong isolation in travel, commuting, and office settings.
Ambient sound controls are also included for moments when outside audio needs to remain audible. Speak-to-Chat is part of the package as well, and Sony says AI-supported voice call improvements are included to enhance communication quality.
The microphone count and processing support show that Sony is not relying on passive over-ear design alone. The company is instead leaning on active sound processing as a core feature of this premium release.
Battery life and charging stay competitive
Sony claims up to 24 hours of battery life with active noise cancellation enabled. That figure keeps the model competitive in the premium wireless category, especially given its focus on luxury and comfort.
Fast charging is available too. Sony says a five-minute charge can deliver about 90 minutes of playback, which should help users manage short top-ups during the day.
For wired listening, the headphones still support a 3.5mm audio jack. However, audio playback through USB-C is not available, which makes the wireless-first approach clear even at this price level.
The global availability of 1000X THE COLLEXION starts this month. With its upgraded materials, comfort-focused redesign, and flagship-level audio features, Sony is using the model as a 10-year celebration for the 1000X series rather than a direct successor to the WH-1000XM6.
