Nokia G42 5G Brings Self-Repair to a £199 Midrange Phone, Backed by 90Hz Display and 5,000mAh Battery

Nokia’s G42 5G stands out in a crowded mid-range market for one reason beyond 5G connectivity: it is designed to be repaired at home. The phone is the first Nokia 5G model to support self-repair, giving users a more practical way to deal with everyday damage.

That approach is built around QuickFix technology, developed with iFixit. Through it, users can access repair guides, official parts, and repair tools so they can handle certain issues without always visiting a service center.

Repair options that go beyond the usual

The self-repair concept is not limited to minor tweaks. Users can replace key components such as the display, battery, and charging port on their own.

In a smartphone market that still relies heavily on conventional after-sales service, that makes the G42 5G more appealing to buyers who want easier maintenance. It also supports longer device use when only light damage occurs.

A design shaped with durability in mind

Nokia has also given the phone a more sustainable build. The rear panel uses 65 percent recycled material, which aligns the device with a more environmentally conscious direction.

The handset comes in So Purple and So Grey, with a body thickness of around 8.5 mm and a weight of 193.8 grams. Nokia says the device has also gone through stricter impact and pressure testing than the previous generation.

For added protection, the display uses Corning Gorilla Glass 3. That should help the screen better handle scratches and light knocks during daily use.

Display and camera setup

On the front, the Nokia G42 5G carries a 6.56-inch IPS LCD display with HD+ resolution of 720 x 1612 pixels. The panel supports a 90Hz refresh rate, which helps scrolling and animations feel smoother.

Its brightness reaches 560 nits, making it more comfortable to use in different lighting conditions. The screen is paired with a waterdrop notch that houses an 8MP front camera.

At the back, the phone uses a 50MP main camera, supported by a 2MP macro sensor and a 2MP depth sensor. Both the front and rear cameras can record video at up to Full HD 30fps, covering everyday photos, short videos, and social media content.

Performance, software, and battery

Power comes from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 480+ 5G chipset. Nokia pairs it with 6GB of RAM and up to 5GB of virtual RAM, while internal storage is set at 128GB and can be expanded with a microSD card up to 1TB.

The device runs Android 13. HMD Global promises up to two years of operating system updates and monthly security updates for the next three years.

For daily endurance, the G42 5G includes a 5,000mAh battery with 20W fast charging. It also carries IP52 certification, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, Bluetooth 5.1, WiFi, GPS, FM Radio, a 3.5mm audio jack, and a USB Type-C port.

Price and availability

In Europe, the Nokia G42 5G is priced at 199 Pounds Sterling for the 6GB/128GB variant, which is around Rp3.7 million. It began appearing in the UK and selected countries from 29 June.

HMD Global has not announced an official launch schedule for India or other Asian markets. For now, the phone’s mix of self-repair support, recycled materials, and familiar mid-range hardware positions it as one of Nokia’s more distinctive 5G releases.
