Android 17 has started rolling out, and Pixel owners are the first to receive the update through an over-the-air release. The initial wave is already underway, putting Google’s own devices at the front of the queue before wider availability expands to other Android brands.
The update is notable not only because it arrives early for Pixel users, but also because it brings meaningful changes across productivity, entertainment, and security. Google has indicated that other Android phones from different manufacturers will follow in the coming months, while eligible devices from multiple brands are expected to receive it throughout 2026.
The first devices in line
The rollout begins with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10. Google is also including the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9, and Pixel 9a in the initial wave.
Older Pixel models are not left behind either. The first batch also covers the Pixel Fold, Pixel Tablet, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8, and Pixel 8a, showing that Google is keeping software support broad across its premium, foldable, tablet, and more affordable lines.
What changes most in Android 17
One of the most noticeable additions is the expanded Bubbles feature. Any app can now be turned into a floating mini window by long-pressing the app icon and enabling bubble mode.
On larger screens such as tablets and foldables, the bubble is placed in a dedicated row at the bottom of the display. That makes switching between apps faster and returning to full-screen mode more convenient with a single tap.
Google has also upgraded the built-in screen recorder with a feature called Screen Reactions. It allows users to capture both the screen and the front camera feed at the same time.
That addition is especially useful for creators who want to record reactions to videos, apps, or on-screen demonstrations. It reduces the need for green screens or separate editing steps to produce that format.
More focus on foldables and gaming
Android 17 introduces a foldable gaming mode designed for foldable phones. In this setup, the screen is split 50/50, with the top half showing the game and the bottom half functioning as a dynamic gamepad.
Google has also added native controller remapping support for users who rely on external controllers. At the same time, RAM cleanup efficiency has been improved so demanding games can run more smoothly with fewer frame drops.
Those additions suggest that Google is paying closer attention to devices with larger or flexible screens. The changes are aimed at interaction patterns that differ from standard slab-style smartphones.
Security and privacy get tighter controls
On the privacy side, Android 17 gives users more flexible permission controls. Location access can now be shared temporarily, and users can share only selected contacts instead of exposing an entire address book.
For lost devices, the “Mark as lost” function in Find Hub has been strengthened. Users can lock a phone with biometric security such as fingerprint or face unlock, which means someone who knows the PIN still cannot access data or disable location tracking.
Google has also tightened the limits on incorrect PIN attempts and added a waiting period after repeated failures. Live Threat Detection has been improved as well to help block scam apps.
Smaller refinements that still matter
Android 17 also brings several smaller changes that affect daily use. Users can now hide app names on the home screen and set a separate volume control for virtual assistants.
Google has further expanded parental supervision features across all Android devices. On the performance side, the update adds limits on how much RAM apps can use, which should help overall system responsiveness and battery life.
For Pixel users, the rollout marks the start of a broader Android 17 cycle that puts multitasking, easier content creation, foldable gaming, and stronger security at the center. The wider Android ecosystem will be watching closely as Google extends the update beyond its own devices in the months ahead.
