Apple may bring an OLED display to the iPad mini as early as the fall, with October identified as a possible launch window. The notable limitation is that the upgraded model is rumored to retain a 60Hz refresh rate rather than gain ProMotion.
That combination would give the compact tablet OLED panel technology without the smoother display motion associated with higher refresh rates. The report has not been confirmed by Apple, so both the timing and the display specifications remain subject to change.
According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, as cited by GSMArena, Apple is moving OLED technology toward the higher tiers of its iPad range. The iPad mini is reportedly among the devices positioned to receive that screen upgrade, while the least expensive iPad is expected to keep LCD.
A premium panel with a reported 60Hz ceiling
ProMotion is Apple’s name for the higher and adaptive refresh-rate technology used on selected devices. The rumored OLED iPad mini would reportedly omit it, leaving the device at 60Hz despite its newer display panel.
The absence of ProMotion could be significant for buyers who place a priority on scrolling and animation smoothness. OLED may still represent a meaningful change for the iPad mini, but the report does not indicate that Apple will pair it with a faster refresh rate.
| Device | Reported display | Reported timing | Key detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPad mini | OLED | As early as fall, possibly October | Rumored 60Hz without ProMotion |
| iPad Air | OLED in development | New model expected in spring | OLED use is not yet confirmed |
| Entry-level iPad | LCD | First quarter next year | Focus said to be chip and RAM upgrades |
Price remains an open question
An OLED transition could also make the next iPad mini more expensive than the current model. No price has been reported for the rumored version, leaving the scale of any increase unclear.
The current iPad mini starts at $599 after Apple recently raised its price. That existing price provides context for the possible positioning of an OLED model, but it does not confirm Apple’s pricing plans.
Apple’s reported display strategy would create a clearer separation between iPad models. The iPad mini and iPad Air are being linked to OLED, while the entry-level iPad is expected to remain on LCD to help control costs.
iPad Air and entry-level iPad plans
An OLED version of the iPad Air is also reportedly in development, although a new iPad Air expected in spring may not necessarily be the OLED version. That spring period could also coincide with the introduction of a new iPad Pro, though the reported details do not specify its changes.
The next entry-level iPad is not expected to receive a new design, according to the report. Its update is instead said to centre on the chip, with either an A18 or A19 mentioned as possible options over the current A16.
The same model could also receive 8GB of RAM, compared with the reported 6GB in the current generation. Its launch is expected sometime between January and March next year.
Beyond the iPad lineup, Apple Pencil is rumored to receive an update in 2027. A replaceable battery is among the reported possibilities, although other details about the accessory have not been disclosed.
