HMD Keeps Fusion 2 and XR22 Alive, Preserving Its Most Unusual Phone Ideas

Author: Qoo Media

HMD Global is reportedly continuing development of the HMD Fusion 2 and HMD XR22, countering claims that both projects had been discontinued. The report keeps two of the company’s most distinctive phone concepts in play: modular customization and high durability.

The information also points to a broader product strategy that does not rely on a single type of smartphone. While one device is expected to focus on adaptable accessories, the other is positioned as a successor in HMD’s rugged phone range.

Development Continues, but Details Remain Limited

Leaker Smashx_60 said on X that the Fusion 2 project is still active, according to a report cited by Vietnam.vn. Its design has not yet been finalized, leaving room for changes before HMD settles on the final version.

That status means images and specifications circulating on social media should be treated cautiously. The visual design and hardware configuration may still change during development.

Model Reported Status Main Focus
HMD Fusion 2 Still in development; design not final Modular phone with Smart Outfits
HMD XR22 Still in development Successor to HMD’s durable phone line

Fusion 2 May Retain Smart Outfits

The defining feature of the Fusion line is its support for Smart Outfits, functional covers that let users adapt the phone through accessories. This modular approach gives the Fusion series a different identity from other HMD phones.

Should HMD preserve that philosophy, the HMD Fusion 2 would continue to place modularity at the center of its appeal. There is no official information yet on design revisions or new capabilities for the second-generation model.

The unfinished design is particularly important because it limits what can be concluded from early leaks. No published render or rumored configuration can be treated as HMD’s confirmed final product.

XR22 Could Refresh the Rugged Range

The HMD XR22 is expected to continue the role held by the HMD XR21 in the durable smartphone category. A newer model would provide a hardware refresh for a line designed around resilience.

The HMD XR21 was essentially a rebranded version of the Nokia XR21, which was released in 2023. HMD has not disclosed technical specifications for the XR22 or explained how it will differ from either earlier model.

As a result, the expected improvements for the XR22 remain unknown. The company has also not described which durability-related changes, if any, will distinguish the new device.

Skyline 2 GT Reportedly Not Planned

The same leak addressed earlier speculation around the Skyline range. It stated that HMD will not release a model called the Skyline 2 GT.

The HMD Skyline 2 is also expected to retain its current camera-cluster styling rather than move to a circular arrangement. This suggests continuity in the visual direction of the Skyline line, at least according to the report.

HMD is reportedly paying significant attention to feature phones alongside its smartphone development. The company is said to be working on a Nokia 2xx series that integrates AI.

Neither the Fusion 2 nor the XR22 has an official launch date. Still, the reported continuation of both projects indicates that HMD has not abandoned its modular and durable phone concepts.
