A Gaming Tablet Reaches for Steam, RedMagic Astra 2 Brings a 185Hz OLED Display

RedMagic Astra 2 is entering global markets with an unusual ambition for an Android gaming tablet: it can provide a route to Steam games through its PC Simulator feature. The system is designed as a dedicated bridge between Android and x86 applications.

According to RedMagic, some titles can run through PC Simulator at up to 2K resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate. That capability places the device beyond a conventional tablet built solely around Android games.

A Fast OLED Panel Takes Center Stage

The tablet uses a 9.06-inch LTPO OLED display with a 185Hz refresh rate. Its average touch sampling rate reaches 300Hz, supporting faster on-screen responses during games that demand quick input.

The display specifications are central to RedMagic Astra 2’s gaming-focused design. RedMagic has paired the fast panel with hardware intended to keep touch interaction responsive.

Power comes from the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, specifically the SM8850-1-AD version. This chipset variant has a higher-clocked prime core and an overclocked GPU.

GSM Arena reports that the same chipset is also used in the Galaxy S26 Ultra. RedMagic offers the tablet with either 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage or 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

Two USB-C Ports for Different Tasks

Another notable hardware choice is the presence of two USB-C ports. One supports high-speed USB 3.2 Gen 2, while the other uses the USB 2.0 standard.

The USB 2.0 port sits on the side of the chassis and can be used for charging during play. Its placement is intended to make the cable less intrusive when the tablet is held in a gaming orientation.

The RedMagic Astra 2 carries an 8,300mAh battery and supports wired charging at up to 75W. The dual-port arrangement and battery capacity reflect the tablet’s emphasis on extended gaming use.

Global Version Keeps the China Hardware

The global model has essentially the same design and hardware as the version first introduced in China as the Gaming Tablet 5 Pro. It ships with Redmagic OS 11.5 based on Android 16.

Camera hardware takes a secondary role in the configuration. The rear camera is rated at 13MP, while the front camera uses a 9MP sensor.

RedMagic will sell the tablet in Eclipse Black and Starfrost Silver, with both colours offered across the two memory configurations. Although the global launch has taken place, sales are set to begin in late August.

An early-bird voucher will provide access to purchase the tablet one day earlier. Voucher holders will also receive an 80W charger as part of the initial sales programme.
