Steam Launch Failure in Forza Horizon 6 May Be Fixed Before a Full Windows Reinstall

Some Forza Horizon 6 players on Steam are running into a problem before the race even begins: the game refuses to open. In response, several fixes have been discussed, and one of them sounds unusual enough to try before taking the drastic step of reinstalling Windows.

The most practical place to start is Steam’s file verification tool. If the download was interrupted or some files became corrupted, Steam can detect the problem and redownload the missing or damaged data.

A restart is also worth doing after that process finishes. It can help clear old cache data before the game is launched again.

Driver updates are another key part of the fix list. Outdated graphics drivers may contribute to the launch failure, and Nvidia has already released version 596.49 with optimizations for Forza Horizon 6 and several other games.

Xbox App and Gaming Services still matter

Even when the game is purchased and installed through Steam, Forza Horizon 6 still depends on Xbox App and Gaming Services to run properly. That means both components need to be installed and updated, especially because the error can be tied to “Invalid Gaming Services Detected.”

If the services are already present but the issue remains, Task Manager can be opened with Ctrl+Shift+Esc to close every Xbox App and Gaming Services process before trying again. This dependency makes the PC version more complicated than many other Steam releases.

The background services behind the game can block the launch chain even when Steam itself is working normally. For some players, the failure is not tied to the storefront at all, but to Microsoft’s services running alongside it.

Security software can also interfere

Firewall settings deserve a check as well, since Forza Horizon 6 relies on internet connectivity for many of its functions. If the firewall blocks the main game application, the title may fail to start from Steam.

The suggested fix is to add a manual exception in the firewall settings. Users need to point the system to the Forza Horizon 6 installation folder and choose the main application file, “forzahorizon6.”

For anyone using third-party antivirus software, the exception should be created inside that app’s firewall settings too, not only in Windows Defender. After the change is made, another restart is needed before testing the game again.

The strange trick that has helped before

One method stands out because it sounds odd, but it has reportedly helped with a previous Forza game. When the title is launched, a small splash image with the Forza Horizon 6 logo appears in the center of the screen, and players are advised to click it several times right away.

This approach was said to have helped with a similar issue in Forza Horizon 5. That history is why it is being treated as a legitimate thing to try now, even though it is not guaranteed to work on every system.

When the problem goes deeper than simple fixes

If all of the usual steps fail, the issue may be tied to more complex conflicts inside Windows itself. Forza Horizon 6 is said to depend heavily on Windows services running in the background, and those interactions can become messy.

Other software components may also be involved, including add-ons such as anti-cheat tools or Visual C++ distributables. When those overlap with other background programs, conflicts with Windows or Gaming Services can prevent the game from opening at all.

Tracing that kind of problem through system logs and registry data is not simple. It requires technical knowledge that most players are unlikely to want to deal with, which is why a clean reinstall of Windows is being described as the most certain last resort.

That option is more drastic than a normal repair because it means wiping system data and starting over with a fresh installation. It should only be considered after backing up important files and exhausting every other fix.

There is also another reported error state worth noting. In that case, the game gets past the splash screen and reaches the start screen, but players still cannot do anything, and support for Forza says that issue is under investigation.
