Flood Watch Holds South Of Houston, More Heavy Rain Likely Through Memorial Day Weekend

A flood watch remains in effect for several counties south of Houston, with Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, Matagorda, Wharton and Jackson counties included in the alert through 7 a.m. Monday. The region has already seen heavy rainfall, and more rounds of rain could add to flooding concerns through the weekend.

Meteorologists are warning that the risk for flooding stays elevated as deep Gulf moisture keeps showers and thunderstorms in the forecast. Some areas received four to eight inches of rain Tuesday night and Wednesday, and additional inches are still possible over the holiday period.

More rain expected across the region

Scattered to widespread showers and storms are likely to continue over the next several days. Some of the stronger cells could bring heavy rain and gusty winds, which would make already saturated ground even more vulnerable to flooding.

Flash flood risk is expected to stay slightly elevated during this stretch. Drivers are being urged to avoid flooded roads and take another route when water covers the roadway.

Weekend rain could worsen street flooding

Rain chances remain high through Memorial Day weekend, with repeated storm rounds possible across the area. Forecast models point to scattered downpours Friday, followed by a heavier rain event from Saturday evening into Sunday morning.

Flooding concerns may rise further if an upper-level low develops in north Texas and places Houston in a more favorable setup for heavy rain. The area is already under a level 2 out of 4 risk for street flooding on both Saturday and Sunday.

What the forecast means for Memorial Day

Some showers are still possible on Memorial Day, although coverage should be lower than during the two previous days. That does not remove the flooding threat completely, since the ground may already be saturated by then.

Residents are being encouraged to monitor the latest alerts and weather updates closely as conditions can change quickly. The flooding risk remains the main concern for several counties south of Houston as the weekend unfolds.

Hurricane season reminder

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration also released its 2026 hurricane outlook, calling for a slightly below-normal season with 8 to 14 named storms, 3 to 6 hurricanes and 1 to 3 major hurricanes. NOAA said the lower count is mainly tied to a strong El Niño expected to develop.

Even with fewer systems expected, forecasters stress that one landfall can still cause major impacts. For the Houston area, the immediate focus remains on repeated rain chances and the possibility of more flooding through the holiday weekend.
