Sugar Ray Leonard has made startling allegations about his son, Daniel Leonard, in court filings submitted just hours after the 25-year-old was arrested in Los Angeles. In the request for a restraining order, the boxing icon described Daniel as an addict, a thief, and a danger to himself and his family, according to a document obtained by The California Post.
Leonard’s handwritten declaration painted a grim picture of repeated conflict at home. He wrote, “He has overdosed 4 times,” adding that “they had to bring him back to life 2 times at the hospital,” and accused his son of stealing “extreme amounts of money” and valuable items over several years.
What Leonard asked the court to do
The filing asked a judge to order Daniel to stay 100 yards away from Leonard, his home, workplace, vehicle, wife Bernadette, and daughter Camille. Leonard also asked that Daniel be required to leave the Pacific Palisades residence.
He wrote that Daniel had been a drug addict “for 7 or 8 years at least” and said his behavior had worsened over time. The court later granted the request, ordering Daniel to keep his distance and move out of the home, while noting that “additional facts” were needed before the order could extend protection to the adult daughter.
The incident that triggered the filing
Leonard said the legal move came after two incidents earlier in the month, including one at his Pacific Palisades home on May 19. He said that encounter turned physical and involved police intervention.
“We had a physical altercation where he pushed me and got ugly!” Leonard wrote. He added that officers were called and Daniel was escorted off the property as the situation escalated.
According to Leonard, a temporary restraining order followed that confrontation. He said Daniel returned the next day, on May 20, and was arrested for violating the order.
Arrest details and court action
Los Angeles County jail records show Daniel was taken into custody at around 6:45 a.m. and remained in custody until May 22. A hearing on the alleged restraining-order violation is scheduled for June 25, according to jail records.
The court order currently lasts until June 15, when a hearing will be held on whether a more permanent restraining order should be issued. Attempts to reach Daniel for comment were not successful.
Leonard’s filing also emphasized the toll the situation has taken on the family. He wrote that his wife was “extremely afraid” and said, “We haven’t had a day of peace in 9 years which is the reality of his addiction,” underscoring how serious he says the conflict has become inside the home.
