JoJo Siwa says there is one topic she and Chris Hughes deliberately avoid, and it is part of what keeps their relationship feeling steady. The pair do not talk about online trolling, and Siwa says that choice helps them protect the positive side of what they share.
The 23-year-old singer, who has been dating the 33-year-old TV personality since they met on Celebrity Big Brother last year, said she felt reassured after reading comments and a report about Hughes praising the way she handles criticism. Speaking to Us Weekly, she said his support meant a lot because they prefer to keep their conversations focused on “positive, fun, loving” moments.
Why They Keep It Off-Limits
Siwa explained that the decision is intentional. She said they avoid the topic “to protect ourselves from it,” adding that they choose not to turn their relationship into a space for negative talk.
At the same time, she made clear that the silence is not about avoiding serious conversations altogether. “If we ever need to, we do,” she said, noting there has only been one time when she told him, “I’m not good right now,” and he was there for her.
How They See Each Other’s Strengths
Siwa also spoke about how the couple could work as a team on Fox’s new gameshow Nation’s Dumbest, which will feature contestants including Carmen Electra, Ice-T, Steve-O, Hilaria Baldwin, Elle King and Dr. Drew Pinsky. She said she and Hughes are “really knowledgeable” in different areas and believe they would balance each other well.
According to Siwa, Hughes has more life experience and strong knowledge in sports and horses, while she brings her own areas of expertise. She said that when they put those strengths together, they are “pretty equal when it comes to smarts.”
Long Distance Has Still Worked For Them
Hughes has also said the relationship is not as difficult as people think, even though he is based in the UK and Siwa lives in the US. In comments to the Daily Mail, he said they have usually found ways to see each other regularly, often by flying back and forth.
He said the travel makes the distance more manageable, and he enjoys spending time with Siwa, her family and the dogs when he is in the US. He also said he always has “a great time” there, despite the cultural differences between the UK and the US.
| Topic | What Siwa Said | What Hughes Said |
|---|---|---|
| Trolling | They do not talk about it | He praised how she handles criticism |
| Relationship dynamic | They keep conversations positive and loving | Long distance is tricky, but manageable |
| Personal strengths | She brings her own knowledge and experience | He is knowledgeable about sports and horses |
The couple’s approach appears to be based on keeping outside noise outside the relationship, while still making room for honest conversations when they are needed. For Siwa, hearing Hughes praise her response to criticism was less about public perception and more about knowing he sees that strength in her.
