The Minnesota Vikings are set to stage a genuine quarterback competition between J.J. McCarthy and Kyler Murray, according to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero. That means Murray is not being handed the starting job, and the team plans to let both quarterbacks compete for the role this offseason.
Pelissero said on The Rich Eisen Show that the Vikings “envision it being a true competition” and that both players will enter camp believing they can win the job. He also added that the quarterback room may not feel especially comfortable, calling it “a very competitive quarterback room.”
A wide-open battle
The Vikings have kept an open mind at quarterback, and Pelissero said the coaching staff has not closed the door on either player. He also noted that, from everything he has learned, the situation remains “truly wide open.”
That stance fits with what team leaders have already signaled. Head coach Kevin O’Connell called for more depth and competition in the quarterback room in January, while interim general manager Rob Brzezinski said in February that the franchise would “explore every opportunity” at the position during the offseason.
McCarthy’s uneven start
McCarthy has had a difficult two years since Minnesota selected him 10th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. Some of his issues have come from his own mistakes, including 12 interceptions in 10 games, while other setbacks have been tied to injuries.
He missed his entire rookie season because of a knee injury, and additional injuries disrupted his second year as well. That combination has left the Vikings with unresolved questions about whether he is ready to claim the starting role.
Murray arrives with experience
Murray’s availability changed the outlook quickly after his release by the Arizona Cardinals. He then signed a league minimum deal with Minnesota, giving the team a proven option with a different track record than McCarthy.
The former Cardinal is a two-time Pro Bowler with seven seasons of NFL experience, and many around the league likely viewed him as the early favorite to start. Pelissero’s reporting suggests that is not the case, and Minnesota still views the competition as unsettled.
What the Vikings are weighing
The Vikings now face a decision that goes beyond experience alone. McCarthy offers the upside of a young former first-round pick, while Murray brings veteran production and a resume that includes multiple Pro Bowl selections.
For Minnesota, the most important spot on the roster remains unresolved, and the coaching staff appears willing to let performance decide it. Pelissero’s update makes clear that the Vikings intend to treat the quarterback job as open territory, with McCarthy and Murray both entering the offseason battle on equal footing.
