Friendster is back on iOS with a design philosophy that runs against the grain of most modern social platforms. Instead of chasing endless recommendations, it brings back a closed and deliberate approach to making connections.

The new app is now available on the App Store for Apple users and is developed by Friendster Labs Inc. It is also notably light, with a file size of 6.5 MB and an age rating of 13+.

One of the clearest signals that this version is built differently is what it leaves out. There are no ads interrupting the feed, no algorithm deciding what users should see, and no follower counts encouraging social comparison.

That stripped-down setup creates a quieter browsing experience. Content appears only from friends who are actually connected inside the user’s network, which means the timeline is more limited but also more controlled.

The connection process is also unusual by current social media standards. Two people cannot simply add each other from a distance, because a friendship can only begin when both are in the same place.

To make that connection, both users must tap their smartphones at the same time. The method turns friendship into something tied to a physical meeting, rather than a digital request sent across a screen.

Mike Carson, the current owner of Friendster, said that relationships in the app can weaken if users do not tap again within a year. That detail reinforces the app’s focus on real contact and the maintenance of in-person ties.

Friendster also avoids open searching for users, making the system feel more enclosed than mainstream social networks. This design keeps the platform centered on real-world circles, while also limiting how easily people can discover new accounts.

For some users, that closed model may feel more private and less noisy than algorithm-driven platforms. For others, the restrictions may make it harder to reconnect with old friends who are no longer nearby.

Still, the return of Friendster is not only about nostalgia for an early social media name. It also presents a reminder that a social network can exist without ads, without algorithms, and without the pressure of follower culture.

The app’s small size fits that approach as well. At 6.5 MB, it stays simple and easy to download, while its limited feature set serves as the core of its identity rather than a weakness.
