Google’s AI Overview briefly turned search into something closer to a chatbot after a bug caused the system to misread certain queries. Instead of returning a normal summary, the feature began replying as if it were an interactive assistant.
The unusual behavior appeared when users entered specific command-like words in Google Search. Short imperative verbs such as “disregard” or “ignore” were not handled as ordinary search terms, and the AI system appeared to interpret them as direct instructions.
That misreading changed the tone of the response. Rather than presenting information in a standard search format, AI Overview produced automatic replies that sounded conversational, including lines such as “Message received!” and “I’m here to help you.”
Google responded quickly after the issue spread online. The company acknowledged that its AI system had misinterpreted some queries and temporarily disabled the affected feature for the triggering keywords.
The move was meant to prevent the problem from expanding further while the technical team prepared an update. Google also indicated that it was working on a fix so a similar incident would not repeat.
The case highlights a broader challenge in search products that increasingly rely on generative AI. Features designed to help users can behave unpredictably when the system reads input in a way that was not intended.
For users, that kind of error can be more than confusing. It also raises questions about how reliable the information experience feels when a search engine starts acting like a conversational agent instead of a search tool.
The timing matters as well, because Google continues to expand Gemini AI across its services while competing in a fast-moving AI market. At the same time, the company still has to keep search accurate and stable, especially as rivals such as ChatGPT add more pressure to move quickly.
This episode serves as a reminder that generative technology still has edges that users can notice immediately. In search, even a small interpretation mistake can change the entire experience from a simple answer to an unintended dialogue.
