Apple Intelligence has cleared a key regulatory hurdle in China, but users should not expect an immediate rollout. The AI service is now registered with China’s cyber regulator for use on iPhone, ending a long wait of about 21 months since its first debut.
The approval matters because AI products must go through registration before they can be offered in China. Even so, the regulator has not said when Apple Intelligence will actually become available to users in the country.
Apple’s China Plan Depends On Local Partners
Apple Intelligence in China is expected to combine AI capabilities from Baidu and Alibaba. Alibaba has confirmed that its Qwen model will be integrated into Apple Intelligence across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS for the Chinese market.
Baidu has also said that Apple is working with the company to develop Apple Intelligence features for iPhone users in China. The two partnerships show how Apple is adapting the service to local rules and market conditions rather than pushing it out alone.
| Party | Role | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Alibaba | AI model provider | Qwen will be integrated into Apple Intelligence on iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS in China |
| Baidu | Feature development partner | Apple is working with Baidu to develop Apple Intelligence features for iPhone users in China |
| China’s cyber regulator | Approval authority | Apple Intelligence has been registered for use on iPhone in China |
No Launch Date Yet
Despite the approval, Apple still controls when the service will begin rolling out. For now, the regulator has granted permission without attaching any launch timetable.
That leaves the service in an important but unfinished stage for one of the world’s largest smartphone markets. For users in China, the approval opens the door, but it does not say when that door will fully open.
