JBL has launched the Flip Essential 3 SE as a new portable Bluetooth speaker built for everyday listening and outdoor use. The model is already on sale in China through JD.com for CNY 899, which is about $125, and it is drawing attention for its IP67 rating and claimed battery life of up to 12 hours.
The speaker targets users who want a compact device that is easy to carry but still tough enough for travel, casual gatherings, and open-air activities. JBL pairs that approach with Bluetooth 5.4, dual-driver audio, and support for Auracast, making the Flip Essential 3 SE more than just a small speaker with a rugged shell.
Compact size, rugged build
The Flip Essential 3 SE measures 180 x 69.5 x 72 mm and weighs about 0.55 kg. That size places it firmly in the portable category, where one-hand carrying and bag-friendly storage matter as much as sound quality.
JBL also includes a strap hook, which adds convenience for people who move between home, work, and outdoor spaces. The design choice reinforces the speaker’s mobile focus and makes it easier to clip or hang during travel.
The IP67 certification is one of its key selling points. In practical terms, it means the speaker is protected against dust ingress and can handle exposure to water under reasonable conditions, which is useful near pools, at parks, or during light rain.
Sound setup built for small-body performance
JBL uses a two-driver configuration to keep the sound output strong despite the compact chassis. According to the listed specifications, the speaker packs a 10W tweeter and a 20W racetrack woofer.
Two passive radiators are also included to strengthen bass response. This setup is common in portable speakers because it helps low frequencies feel fuller without increasing the device’s size too much.
The frequency response ranges from 63 Hz to 20 kHz. That range suggests the Flip Essential 3 SE is designed to handle a wide mix of content, from vocals and podcasts to bass-heavy tracks and general streaming audio.
Connectivity gets a modern update
For wireless connectivity, JBL equips the speaker with Bluetooth 5.4. The newer standard should help improve pairing speed and connection stability, especially in places where many wireless devices are active.
The speaker supports SBC and AAC codecs, which keeps it compatible with a broad range of phones, tablets, and other audio sources. That wide support matters for users who switch between platforms and want reliable playback without extra setup.
Auracast support is another notable addition. It can enable multi-speaker audio setups or stereo pairing with a second Flip Essential 3 SE, giving the product more flexibility for larger listening sessions.
Battery life and charging
JBL says the Flip Essential 3 SE can play music for up to 12 hours on a single charge. That figure fits the needs of users who want a speaker that can last through a workday, a picnic, or several hours of indoor and outdoor listening.
Charging uses USB Type-C, and a full recharge takes around 3 hours. The move to USB-C also improves convenience because it matches the modern charging setup used by many smartphones and accessories.
App control and extra features
The speaker works with the JBL Portable app, which allows users to adjust sound settings, manage multi-speaker connections, and switch playback modes. That gives the device a more flexible approach than a basic plug-and-play speaker.
Software support can be especially useful for users who listen to different content types. A speaker may sound better for music with one setting and better for podcasts or video playback with another.
