Sony Xperia 1 VIII has started drawing attention after CAD renders surfaced online, offering the clearest look yet at how Sony may reshape its next flagship. The leak points to a phone that keeps Sony’s familiar premium identity while introducing a new camera layout, a hole-punch display, and a triple 48MP setup.
The images were first shared by an account called Insider Sony on X, and they suggest that Sony is preparing a more noticeable design refresh than usual. The handset is shown in three color options: black, green, and purple.
A new camera island changes the Xperia look
The biggest visual shift appears on the back of the device, where Sony is said to be moving to a square camera module. That module reportedly holds three rear cameras and an LED flash, replacing the vertical arrangement that has long defined the Xperia family.
This is a meaningful change for a brand that often keeps its design language consistent from one generation to the next. Even so, the leak suggests Sony is not abandoning its identity entirely, since the overall shape still looks recognizably Xperia.
Hole-punch display marks a front-side shift
Another notable change is found on the front, where the Xperia 1 VIII is rumored to adopt a hole-punch display. That would be a clear break from Sony’s usual approach, which has often placed the front camera in the top bezel instead of using a notch or punch-hole cutout.
The move suggests Sony may be following a more mainstream smartphone design trend. At the same time, it could help the phone look more modern and maximize screen space, which matters for a flagship aimed at premium buyers.
Triple 48MP cameras are reportedly on the way
The camera system is also said to be a major upgrade. According to the leak, Xperia 1 VIII will feature three 48MP sensors, while the ultra-wide camera is said to remain the same as the one used on Xperia 1 VII.
The telephoto camera is also expected to use a sensor size between 1/3 inch and 1/2 inch. That detail suggests Sony may still focus on imaging flexibility, even as it revises the camera housing and front design.
What Xperia 1 VII tells us about the next flagship
The Xperia 1 VIII will arrive as the successor to the Xperia 1 VII, which Sony launched in May last year. That model came with a 6.5-inch full-HD+ display, a 120Hz refresh rate, and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection.
Under the hood, the Xperia 1 VII used the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, paired with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. Its rear camera setup included a 48MP Sony Exmor T main sensor with a 1/1.3-inch size, a 12MP Sony Exmor RS camera, and another 48MP Sony Exmor RS sensor.
Sony also equipped that phone with a 5,000mAh battery and 30W fast charging. The Xperia 1 VIII is expected to build on that foundation, especially if the leaked triple 48MP setup proves accurate.
Sony’s familiar features may still stay
Despite the design changes, one feature said to remain is the front-facing stereo speakers. That has long been one of the more appreciated Xperia traits, especially for users who value media playback and gaming audio.
Sony has not confirmed the launch timing or the final specifications of the Xperia 1 VIII. Still, the leak has already made the phone one of the most closely watched upcoming flagships, especially because it appears to combine a new design direction with Sony’s established focus on display quality, camera hardware, and front-firing audio.
