Samsung Splits Its Foldable Strategy, Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra Aim at Very Different Buyers

Samsung’s next major foldables are taking shape as two clearly different devices rather than one shared formula. The leaked details of the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra suggest a split strategy that separates portability, camera ambition, and battery size.

Both models are said to use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, but that is where much of the overlap ends. Samsung appears to be reserving the standard Fold8 for users who want a lighter wide-style device, while the Ultra is being positioned as the more aggressive flagship.

Galaxy Z Fold8 focuses on a wider format and lighter build

The Galaxy Z Fold8 is reported to use a 7.6-inch main display with a 2448×1848 resolution and a 4:3 aspect ratio. Its cover screen is said to measure 5.5 inches with a 1248×1972 resolution, and both panels support a 120Hz refresh rate.

A titanium display substrate is also mentioned in the leak, along with a design change intended to make the crease nearly invisible. That approach points to refinement rather than a complete reinvention of Samsung’s foldable formula.

On memory and storage, the Fold8 is said to come with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and either 256GB or 512GB of storage, or 16GB of RAM paired with 1TB. Samsung is also reportedly preparing Graphite, Cream, Lavender, and Pistachio, with some of those finishes exclusive to the Samsung online store.

The camera setup is more restrained than the Ultra’s. The Fold8 is said to carry a 50MP f/1.8 main camera and a 50MP f/1.9 ultrawide camera, while the two selfie cameras are both listed at 10MP f/2.2.

Battery life and size remain key selling points

Samsung is reportedly fitting the Fold8 with a 4,800 mAh battery, 45W wired charging, and wireless charging support. The battery is said to retain at least 80% of its original capacity after 1,200 charging cycles.

The device is also described as 4.5 mm thick when unfolded and 201 grams in weight. In Germany, the starting price is expected to land at €1,999.

Fold8 Ultra shifts the focus to camera power

The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is being described as the true successor to the Galaxy Z Fold7. Its internal display is said to measure 2256×2504, while the cover display is a 6.5-inch panel with 1080×2520 resolution, both running at 120Hz.

The bigger shift comes on the back. Samsung is said to be preparing a 200MP main camera with OIS and an f/1.7 aperture, a 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and an f/2.4 aperture, and a new 50MP ultrawide camera with an f/1.9 aperture.

The front cameras remain at 10MP f/2.2 on both sides, matching the Fold8. The Ultra also uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy and offers the same RAM and storage combinations as the standard model.

Where it separates further is battery and chassis design. The Fold8 Ultra is said to include a 5,000 mAh battery with 45W wired charging and wireless charging, while its unfolded thickness is listed at 4.1 mm and its weight at 218 grams.

Samsung is reportedly planning Graphite, Cream, and Violet Shadow for the Ultra, with Green Shadow reserved for the Samsung online store. The starting price is expected to be €2,199, and the same battery durability claim of 1,200 cycles before dropping below 80% capacity also applies here.

Taken together, the two devices show a more deliberate split in Samsung’s foldable lineup. The Fold8 leans toward lighter handling and a wide-format design, while the Ultra concentrates on a larger battery and a far more ambitious rear camera system.
